Pharmaceutical logistics is the transport and storage of medicines, vaccines, biologics and clinical trial materials with continuous temperature control and full documentary traceability under GDP rules. The cargo has to reach the pharmacy, hospital or patient in the same condition in which it left the factory.

BIOCARD has been in pharmaceutical logistics in Russia since 1989 and takes on the full logistics chain with our own resources wherever possible: temperature-controlled transport of medicines, a 30,000 m² Class A warehouse for medicines in Vyrubovo, customs clearance by our own customs broker since 2013, air delivery and international shipments. We make SafePack thermal containers and SmartSensor temperature loggers ourselves and manage orders on our own IT platform. We have offices in Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg and Dubai. Delivering health!

What is pharmaceutical logistics

It is a separate branch of logistics with strict rules: an ordinary box can be shipped any way you like, but a medicine only within a set temperature range, with the mode confirmed by documents and with a responsible party at every link of the route.

Temperature mode

Every medicine has its own range: vaccines and insulins at +2…+8 °C, some biologics frozen at −20 or −70 °C, ordinary medicines at room temperature, +15…+25 °C. A breach of the temperature mode makes an expensive medicine unusable.

Cold chain

Continuous temperature control from the sender's warehouse to the recipient. If even one link breaks, the cargo is at risk. This is where quality is lost most often, which is why we keep the chain under our own control.

GDP rules

Good Distribution Practice (GDP) answers the questions: at what temperature to ship, how to confirm it with documents, who is responsible for the cargo and what to do in case of a deviation.

Documentary traceability

A SmartSensor logger records the temperature along the whole route. That record is not a formality but protection for the product: ready material for the quality department and inspections.

Licence and responsibility

A carrier of medicines must hold a pharmaceutical licence. We have one — plus an ISO 9001 certificate, and we work to GDP rules. We write the required temperature mode directly into the contract.

Special packaging

Not just any refrigerated truck, but validated thermal containers with cool packs for a specific mode, which hold the temperature even without external power.

Temperature modes in pharmaceutical logistics

Every medicine has its own temperature range. For each mode we select a SafePack thermal container and cool packs, a warehouse zone and a method of transport.

Dry ice sublimates at about −78.5 °C, and as it evaporates the temperature in the box rises, which is why we label the dry-ice transport mode as −70 °C. In rare cases we also ship in intermediate modes, for example +8…+15 °C.

Full cycle on our infrastructure

Pharmaceutical logistics is not a single shipment but a chain of links, and the cold chain breaks most often at the junctions between them. That is why we keep the key links under our own control and take the cargo turnkey, door to door.

Timing and geography

Within Russia, door-to-door courier delivery of medicines takes from 24 hours for the western part of the country and from 48 hours for the other regions — from Kaliningrad to the Far East. For non-urgent cargo there is groupage temperature-controlled transport on a schedule. Internationally — China → Russia and UAE / Gulf countries.

For details of timing and routes, see the pages on temperature-controlled transport of medicines, air transportation of medicines and international transport of medicines.

Frequently asked questions about pharmaceutical logistics

What is pharmaceutical logistics?

Pharmaceutical logistics is the transport and storage of medicines, vaccines and biomaterials with continuous temperature control and documentary confirmation of the temperature mode under GDP rules. The main task is to deliver the medicine in the same condition in which it left the factory and to be able to prove it with documents.

How does pharmaceutical logistics differ from pharmaceutical shipping?

Shipping is one link in the chain. Pharmaceutical logistics covers the whole cycle: import and customs clearance, storage in a licensed warehouse, packaging and temperature control, transport to the recipient and the documents that confirm the temperature mode. If you only need delivery, see our temperature-controlled transport service for medicines.

How is pharmaceutical logistics different from ordinary logistics?

Ordinary cargo can be shipped in any conditions, but a medicine only within a set temperature range (+2…+8, +15…+25, −20 or −70 °C), in validated packaging, with continuous control and supporting documents. A pharmaceutical licence and compliance with GDP are required.

Is a licence required to transport medicines in Russia?

Yes. Transporting and storing medicines requires a pharmaceutical licence from Roszdravnadzor. BIOCARD has one, plus an ISO 9001 certificate, and works to GDP rules. We write the required temperature mode directly into the contract, and we are responsible for it under the contract.

How is temperature controlled during pharma transport?

We put our own SmartSensor IoT logger into the shipment: it records temperature, humidity, shocks and light along the whole route. SafePack thermal containers hold the temperature without external power for up to 96 hours (selected validated PCM configurations, specified test conditions). The temperature report is kept in the request card in your personal account (Files tab) once it is attached to the order.

Do you ship pharmaceuticals across Russia and internationally?

Yes, across all of Russia: by door-to-door courier and air, from Kaliningrad to the Far East, and by regular groupage routes along the main directions (Siberia, the Urals, the South, the Volga region, the Golden Ring and St Petersburg, plus Kaliningrad). Internationally — China → Russia and UAE / Gulf countries, with customs clearance by our own broker.

How much does it cost and how do I get a quote?

Tell us what needs to go where, and we will work out the route, the timing and the cost for your temperature mode, free of charge. Clear figures, no small print.

Under the public transport offer, acceptance is signed through electronic document exchange before the first transport order. A registration link is then sent to the email in the acceptance, and orders are placed in the client account. If you have no electronic signature or need different contract terms, the manager agrees the contract route. Storage is arranged separately. How to start working with BIOCARD →

Equipment is selected for the cargo, route and conditions. The stated holding time of up to 96 hours applies to selected tested SafePack configurations; it is not a guarantee for every model, load or dry-ice shipment. The manager can provide the test report for the relevant model and range by email. Temperature reports in the client account are available once attached to the order.
